Spring Green Timber Growers Sales and Jobs Shoot Up 500%

A combination of factors increased our sales this year in a multi-facetted global wood products marketing campaign.   Sure we have nice wood with a good story, but it is the hard and creative work by Timber Growers staff that has made our small local business a world-wide success.  My choice is to hire really smart people, teach them a little woodworking, and give them the freedom to express themselves.  My store managers in particular have taken Timber Growers to a higher orbit of sales success this year.

First, Amie Fisher and Matt Van Susteren have taken our salvaged dead elm, oak, birch, walnut, & cherry timber and created a unique product line that people love to see and touch.  Each piece is a one-of-a-kind work of art and love.  Amie is a painter and Matt is a potter, but recently they put their minds to woodworking and have thrived.

One year ago they introduced our wood products on a website for hand made products -  ETSY.com - and our internet sales took off in the month before Christmas.  This year sales of Christmas gifts and ornaments became our main business – with an increase of 500% over last year.  We have already hired more workers and I plan to double our production and staff again in 2012.

In addition to retail internet sales, Fisher and Van Susteren have developed a wholesale catalog of our wood products and are quickly developing that market also.  Cutting boards and corporate gifts are popular wholesale products.  Wholesale shows and working with manufacturing representatives are generating growing interest quickly.

The duo also has taken finished products to Retail shows in Chicago and Vancouver, gaining sales and exposure for their beautiful wood creations.

Local sales in the Timber Growers store downtown Spring Green and the flooring sales at Timbergreen Farm have not been sustainable in 2011, so the diversity of marketing programs and products has been essential to our business growth.   We will keep working hard on the store and flooring installation business to promote the use of locally grown and manufactured forest products.

Beautiful, Artistic, Hand-Crafted, Natural, Sustainably-Harvested, Solar Kiln-Dried, Solid wood products command high market demand and value, allowing me to put a growing number of people to work, utilizing just a portion of the trees that naturally die each year in our 200 acre forest here at Timbergreen Farm.  I choose to sell products that are as natural as possible, using the smallest tools practical, and maintaining the maximum amount of human touch and love.

Buy Local Wood to Create New Jobs

Buying Local In the Global Economy

We have all chosen to buy lots of ‘cheap’ and ‘convenient’ stuff as we have lived the good lifestyle on plentiful natural resources while accumulating thoughtless and irresponsible debt.  Cheap stuff comes at a very high price.

We are all responsible for our current economic crisis and the shortage of jobs.  Take a close look at what you have bought the last few years….   We can also change things – starting right now – to develop the best economic position possible for our future.

Many people apparently think ‘buy local’ means shopping for imported stuff on sale at the neighborhood big box store.  Lusting over imported manufactured stuff has exported our money and our jobs.   American industry and jobs have crumbled away.   We export our natural resources, ship materials half way around the world, minimize labor and production costs, ship the products back half way around the world – then complain we have recession and unemployment!!

Every purchase you make is a real vote that immediately counts to affect the future of our planet.  Every purchase you make builds up the company and country where the thing is from.   Every purchase you make has a political effect too, as the big companies exert real and immediate influence on our politicians.

We have created this monster we face today with our selfish and short-sighted purchases.  We can choose to change this now – just stop feeding the monster and it will go away.

How to “Create Jobs”
Today, most of the stuff we buy is made in a big factory with big machines and robots and likely in another country.  Government Regulations and Legal Lawsuits make labor very expensive in America.  Americans everyday are more lazy and fat - and in love with welfare, and the lottery.   Then we say, “we must create more jobs….”

All the politicians talk about creating jobs, yet fail to address the real problems.  Government does a thousand times more to discourage American jobs than the feeble efforts of talk and “stimulus”.

As a business owner – one thing would get me to hire more employees – SALES!!  Government on the State and Federal Level has been a huge hindrance to my business for decades.  They should just get out of the way – today more than ever!

Globalization has CHANGED the planet
The internet – instant global communications – is the most amazing creation ever.  The airplane is second.  Earth – our economics – has truly changed and there is no going back.

Everyone needs to travel and watch the rest of the world to have a realistic picture of where you fit into the big picture and your effect on others.  Most people choose to be ignorant and don’t want to believe their lifestyle is very wasteful and damaging to the planet.

Homo Sapiens are being Homogenized.  Worker wages are being pressured to a more common-ground level.  High paid American workers will get less in the future and workers in the Far East will demand more.  There is no stopping this trend – a wise person will work within it to arrive at the best position possible for themselves.

We are mixing it up today around the world – nothing is hidden and there is no excuse for ignorance.  Seeing how much we are all about the same is our best hope for survival now.  We are all in this together and better learn to get along.

The Most Powerful Force On Earth
The best chance we have is to rebuild our local economies and communities that have been destroyed by the big corporations.  We created them ourselves with our lusts for cheap and convenience, and we can change the world by making smarter spending decisions - from now on.  The American Woman – the Shopper – is the most powerful force on earth today.  The Shopper has the free choice to support whatever company and country with the power of their purchase.  The Shopper is the one who can create jobs with their votes.  Every single vote counts.

Simple Steps to Change the Economy:
  1. Buy As Local As Possible
  2. Buy from a company As Small As Possible
  3. Drive as little as Possible
  4. Do the Opposite (of what got us here)

Big is Bad – most of the time….
Generalizations are not all true, but the long term trends now show the route we are going - being dominated by bigger and bigger corporations that dominate the Government also – are not good or sustainable for most humans.

Do the opposite of what the big corporations and their puppet politicians want you to do.
Be discerning when listening to their talk.
If you feed the monster – don’t complain when you get bitten!

People all over are very angry, fearful, and without much hope.

There is HOPE
The American Dream of one person making a difference is now a Global Possibility for any human being.   The information and tools are becoming more freely available everywhere today.   Grab Globalization and take advantage of the good alternatives.

Most people may not care, but for those who choose – great opportunities are present today.

Stop Feeding The Monsters

Here is How We Can Fix Our Government…
Stop Feeding the Monsters

The Ongoing Embarrassment in Washington DC brings everything into clear view – but don’t blame Obama or Boehner…    We are All Responsible for the mess we are in.

We can also immediately change things.
We need to see the problem and make an effort to do the opposite.

Most people feel that the government is out of control and there is nothing they can do about it.  Many people vote in an election, but not even that seems to make any difference.  Special Interest Groups and Lobbyists and unseen Players now have the power.

Big Money has taken control of the government.  Politicians must play the game to get and stay elected.   A few behind the scenes individuals yield the real power.

We have all helped the big corporations take control of our government and our lives.  Every single purchase we make is an effective vote for the future that truly counts and makes a difference.  Buying cheap stuff from a big company immediately builds up that company.  Buying cheap imported stuff directly exports our money and our jobs.

Our Choosing Cheap and Convenient has contributed to the bad effects of globalization.  Globalization has happened, but we don’t have to be controlled by distant huge corporations any more.  Buying the Best Value is our Best Hope for our Future.

Three areas where we can make an immediate impact on our local economy are to buy local food, local wood, and local renewable energy.  Buy Everything As Local As Possible from a Company As Small As Possible - and everything will change quickly.

We don’t have to feed the monster any more – we can choose to change things very quickly with our daily purchases.  Support small local business, feed the local economy, and starve the Big Corporations.  Their power will soon be depleted.

Communities focusing on local food, wood, and renewable energy can be largely self sufficient.  Communities organized to meet local needs can be stable in a crisis.

We need to focus on what government services are essential.  Government should do just what government is best at – but get government out of the business sector – that clearly hasn’t worked.   Everyone should play an active role in government and put personal pressure on elected officials to listen to the local people that elected them.

If we make smart purchasing decisions, we can create the best future possible for our communities and country and world in the new global economy.

Full Value Forestry at Timbergreen Farm

Full Vigor Forestry
Sustainable Forest Management from the Forest Owner’s Point of View.
Jim Birkemeier –  Timbergreen Farm   Spring Green, Wisconsin, U.S.A

Our family harvested timber for the first time in 1974.  I logged the best trees from 30 acres and our best bid for the logs was $1,400.  That total amount was very disappointing and didn’t even cover our costs.  After earning a forestry degree from the University of Wisconsin and working for several years as a consulting forester helping other landowners sell their timber in the traditional timber industry, I harvested some more of our family timber. The thought was to do it right this time, but we had the same disappointing result.  Timber prices are simply too low to pay for good logging and earn a fair price to the grower for their time, effort, and investment.  If the forest owner is not paid a profitable price for their timber, you better not call anything “Sustainable” when I’m around.  Forests and Forest Owners are The  Bottom of the Wood Chain – swallowed up and pooped out by big industry.  I chose to NOT be a sardine any longer.  I tried every part of the industrial/government forestry system as a professional forester and as a forest owner for decades - and finally quit in disgust.

I relearned forestry in my woods with my chain saw following the guiding gut feeling of ‘do just the opposite’ of what everyone else is doing in the timber industry.   It worked!!  Now I can earn $1,400 from a single small tree that is considered worthless in the timber market, and I can earn many thousands of dollars per tree for our better timber.

As the landowner, timber grower, forest manager, logger, sawmiller, and woodworker, I learned the same knowledge of the native-American Menominee Tribal Forests in NE Wisconsin and the traditional German Dauerwald.  The Menominee forest managers maximize the quality and quantity of timber grown while encouraging greater natural diversity.   They grow a healthy tree as long as it is vigorous and the risk of allowing the tree to stand until the next harvest cycle is low.   There is no maximum size or age for a tree, and they just harvest part of the natural output of the forest.  The German Dauerwald emphasizes natural succession and regeneration, with the understanding to “watch nature”.   High-grading out the best trees or over-harvesting is Never Allowed.   The Best Harvesting techniques and woodworking tools and methods have been gleaned by studying the Scandinavians.

Timbergreen Farm – The best of the best ideas from around the world have been sought out, modified, and personalized for maximum benefit to our family woodworking business.  I looked at what resources I had right on the farm and found better ways than industrial logging:
Harvest the worst trees first – let the good trees grow as long as they are healthy and vigorous.
Encourage natural succession and natural regeneration.  Watch nature and learn!!
Take only part of the natural output of the forest, what nature can spare.
Never let market demand determine what trees are cut for short term profit.
Perform a small annual harvest for a steady income and minimal impact.
Pay a professional timber feller a good wage for excellent selective harvesting.
Use the smallest possible equipment to move the logs, carrying the weight when possible.
Solar heated lumber kilns produce excellent quality lumber.  Isolate collector from wood room.
Make high value finished wood products from low value logs.  Small, crooked, undesirable trees.
Use all wood waste for fuel, bedding, mulch, bonfires.
Sell what you have, find the best use for every piece of wood harvested.
Plan ahead to meet needs in the local economy first – then export extra wood.
Happy customers sell more of your products when they show-off and tell their friends
Each floor/product is a showpiece to new customers. Happy Customers become volunteer sales staff.
Eliminate all the brokers, middlemen, shippers, wholesalers – keep all the money at home.
Selling finished products gives feedback to become a better forester, logger, woodworker.
Sell each piece of wood for its highest value use.   Make Value not Volume.
Earn a high annual income to encourage protecting the forest for future production.
Use the value of natural solid wood products to support well paying jobs for local people!
Use the simplest, smartest method for each step.
Do just the opposite of what the big timber industry would do.

Create Jobs Connecting the Forest to the Local Community
Last time I talked with Marshall Pecore, forest manager at Menominee Tribal Enterprises, he said they had one full time employee for every 400 acres of forest.  Since my harvest cycle can be on an annual basis, instead of every 13 years like at Menominee, our timber management can be much more productive and efficient.   Since we manufacture a much higher percentage of our harvested wood to a higher value and practice direct marketing, we can make a lot more money from every cut tree.
Making and installing flooring in the customer’s home can support one full time employee for every 20-40 acres of forest at Timbergreen Farm.
Spring Green Timber Growers retail store can support one full time employee for every 5-10 acres of forest.
A wood products business that uses urban trees can support one full time employee for every 50 trees that would otherwise go into the chipper/landfill each year.
Forests should Directly and Primarily benefit the forest owner and the local community, providing regular income, jobs, wood products, fuel, wildlife, water, recreation.....   Direct marketing of high value wood products in a local economy can make this feasible.
You can choose to work in any part of this process.  Spring Green Timber Growers do it everyday – these numbers are real and can be duplicated by other small businesses.  This chart shows the range in values obtainable for hardwood timber and wood products in the USA, June 2011.

We choose to earn Hundreds of dollars per tree for small diameter timber and thousands of dollars per tree for sawtimber sized trees by selling installed flooring and ‘Mega Value’ products.  We choose to sell our wood direct to customers and eliminate all the brokers, wholesalers, shippers etc., and keep all the money right here in the family business.  We do this to protect and manage our natural forest.

Timber Growers actually earn just about the same money whether we process a tree with good commercial value or a ‘worthless’ tree.  All species have about the same high value in this system.

With flooring, we can earn about $10/board foot for a large volume of wood.  This is the threshold value where I believe a small woodworking business can operate profitably.  “Mega Value” products are higher priced items that take more time and skill to produce.  Furniture, cabinets, countertops, stairways, etc. can earn $20/bf or higher but typically use less volume of better quality wood.  Spring Green Timber Grower’s retail store makes a variety of wood art creations using a laser cutter/engraver that can earn up to $500/bf for jewelry, boxes, ornaments, and other small items that we export around the world.

Earning is limited only by the imagination.  The potential market is endless and growing.   Woodworking is simple and practical on a small scale.  Woodworking is nothing new.

Conclusion:
One very important lesson on processing low value trees into high value products:  A landowner or timber grower owned business can actually sustain manufacturing low value logs, as they also get the high value of improving their forest and land resource.  Without gaining the extra benefit of improving your forest, there is no incentive to process small, crooked, defective logs that are very expensive to carefully harvest.   A business strictly into making money woodworking can easily get better quality logs at cheaper prices from other landowners who do not value or manage their timber.

Earning high value for traditionally low value logs is essential to actually doing sustainable forest management – from the forest owner’s point of view.
